Task 2: analysing the movie 'No country for old men'

This movie is called no country for old men which won four Oscars, directed by Ethan and Joel Coen. starring Tommy lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin and Woody Harrelson. The movie takes place in rural part of Texas, deserted from the loud noises of the urban land.

The scene starts with a male character talking (voiceover) over cinematic images of deserted land with no  life, the male character sounds like he is around 60 years old and has a country accent which links in with the location of the movie a it is american rural town, he says he was a county sheriff from when he was 25 years he then says 'hard too believe' like he may be a sheriff for a long time so he would be quiet old if he was a sheriff for a long there is no music over the voiceover.
He talks about a man who killed a 14 year old girl and he also says that man would 'if they would turn him down he do it again' she sounds like that man is a bit crazy which may signify that there maybe some one like that, a crazy person who will not care about killing someone.

There is a sun rise which is showing how a new day is coming and something new may happen to a calm and peaceful town, it maybe something good or bad.
A sunrise is signifying something new but as you do not actually see the sun just the sunrise the new thing may not be a good thing as connotations of light are good, warm and peaceful so if you are not seeing the whole sun it's like something is covering the good in this town.
the last quote from the voiceover is 'OK, I'll be apart of this world' as he is talking about all this negative things he maybe saying that because of the whole negative things that happen in this world he will be apart of this world therefore he will no matter what happens he will try to protect the world from all this negative things which are causing the world to be a bad place.

The picture on he left  is showing a police officer and a criminal sitting in the back sit, you can clearly see the officer as the light is showing him his face glasses and his police badge while the man sitting in the back seat is not shown as that part is darkened. this may imply as he is in the back seat he has done something bad and also because of the lighting which makes it that you cannot see the criminal therefore there is something bad about him from the lighting. The officer in the police station is quiet young around mid twenties therefore he will not have that kind of experience with dealing with very powerful and smart criminals which means that the criminal is more powerful than him and as that scene progresses you see the criminal in the background jumping over his feet to have his hands in front of him rather than  behind him and then he smothers him to death after he finishes talking to the county sheriff. this shows that as he is young he will not be able to stop someone like that.

TASK 10: EVALUATION

1. Our opening film sequence of new fiction film use horror forms/ genres/conventions are atmospheric ambient sound which creates tension and makes the atmosphere quit scary and it creates suspense. We got this idea from the movie ‘Halloween’ (1978) for its eerie non diegetic sound when he is about to find and kill his first victim to scare and keep in suspense the audience.

We are using two cameras and one of them will be in the movie for 1st person action using the idea of ‘paranormal activity’ (2007) and ‘Halloween’ (1978) and this is not a traditional convention which the protagonist is shot in the first person and it is not shot in the older movies but in the modern movies. We semi challenged it by having the protagonist to have the first person camera rather than the antagonist in the movie ‘Halloween’ (1978).

The subjective point of view will show the protagonist from his point of view and will make it more like you are in the movie and you are the character rather than you are by them so it makes it more frightening as you are the victims not by the victims. But we are using a 3rd person camera for all round viewing of the characters and the surroundings so this gives two different perspectives.
Our opening sequence of a new fiction film develops or challenge form/genre/conventions by having a different flashback as we are not using more of visual footage of a victim or a scene but more of an audio flashback which challenges the conventions of horror movies as it does not give you are not seeing action but you are listening to the footage. This part is from the movie ‘Friday the 13th’ (2009) as it shows how and why the antagonist kills and leaves his victims so this leaves not clues why he does this.

2.  Within our media product we have represented couple different social groups which we used two characters one of them is the alpha male and the other one is the younger, weaker nerdy kid. This can be seen how the two characters interact with each other in the opening scene.

Right from the start of the movie you get that feeling that Connor is the dominant male as he bosses him around and tells him what to do. Stereo typically nerds are very smart, like technology and are very good with technology so Connor tells him to deal with the camera and he does.
The costume of the nerdy character is that he wears glasses and this is stereotypical as nerds normally wear glasses. The dominant character pushes the nerdy character down to show his dominance and also shows that the nerdy character is weaker than the other character. the character has a drawing book as a prop as well to add to his character.

3.  One of media institutions which might distribute our media product is 'Lionsgate' as they are well known for making big budget horror films which suits our film as we would need to be a big budget horror film. we chose them because they produced/distributed many big budget horror films like the 'Saw' series and 'Daybreakers' which are quiet fames big budget horror films and we think that are movie would be in the region that those films are as  low budget film. So we need the money from 'Lionsgate' to make it a big budget movie as we do need to use CGI and other things to make the 'Slenderman' better and more frightening for the audience

Another studio which could distribute our product is a well-known British studio which was founded in 1934 is 'Hammer films productions' which is a very popular film production for making horror film which they are the ones which distributed the famous 'Dracula' film in '1958'. 'Dracula' is defiantly the most famous vampire as every generation has heard of him as he has been shown in cinemas since 1931. Hammer productions has been making films since 1930s until 1970s and they had a break for couple of years until they came back producing films. they came back with the remake of the good Swedish movie 'let the right one in' which they called it 'let me in' and also the success of the film 'women in black' made the production to start producing more films. We need a film studio which only produces horror films and as it is a British studio it would help make the movie here and not have to move the production.

4.  The audience for our media product would be 16-18 who enjoy watching horror films as they like to be scared. Also, people who follow the ‘Slenderman’ myth since the begging and want to watch the film to see if it is accurate enough. And there might be people who are new to the myth and want to see the film and learn about it.  Lastly, as the actors/characters are quiet young this film would appeal to younger generation a bit more as the audience and the characters are in a similar age.  There are some scenes which will not appeal to young children as it will not be appropriate for them to watch it as there will be scenes of blood and gore so they will not want to watch it. in our film we did not take into account the ethnic or location based groups within our media product.

5.  We attracted the audience through the characters that were similar age to the audience so the audience can relate to as we used younger character. Also, for the characters we used the social hierarchy of modern school which links the two friends’ one being at the top, the dominant character, which is more social than the Aidan’s character the weaker one out of them. Connor is expected to be more social than Aidan as Aidan is more of the smarter nerdy character and those characters are normally in the lower social hierarchy.

Connor has more of a dominant cocky and arrogant personality while Aidan has a timid personality which is trying to look up to Connor’s higher social status. We have attracted the audience through the storyline by having a familiar antagonist which over the past year the myth has become very popular and people are unsure if the story is fake or real, just like in our product as they are trying to find out whether it is real or fake. The myth has been popular in many different countries as people have said that they have claimed that the strange figure which looks like the Slenderman has taken their family and friends from them by the strange figure. This attracts our audience as the audience have heard of the myth and makes it more real and they may become more scared over this and they can imagine themselves in the characters shoes. The titles address the audience which are using sharp shapes and dark colours to let the audience know that this is a horror. Also, the title of the movie is one word which attracts the audience as popular horror film were just one word like ‘Saw’ and ‘Halloween’ which only have one word and have attracted audience very well. Also, the titles used glitches as they link with as they link with a bit of our products’ storyline as we are using cameras inside the our product and the main characters want to prove a myth with a camera.

The music attracts the audience as we used loud, ambient and eerie sound which may make the audience jump by it as quiet at one point and it comes very quickly and loud which may scare the audience. In the beginning the sound is very eerie and dark which will let the audience know that this is a horror film.

For our advertising and marketing campaign we used parts from other big films to advertise and market to make the Slenderman back to life. Our plan to market or product is that we used notes from the video game of the Slenderman around different towns, cities and countries for people and fans to find. This idea we used from the movie ‘The dark knight rises’ as Warner brothers used this marketing idea to promote the film to the audience. They promoted it by hiding the signs of batman so that other people may find it. Also we thought about using different false videos and news feeds about the strange Slenderman to hint clues to where the notes could be and advertise the myth a bit more.   This advertising we promote the movie by making the audience guess about the origins. We used this advertising campaign from the advertising campaign of the movie ‘Cloverfield’ as they made a video and put it on the web about a creature which a ship was sunk by it and the creature had some tentacles.   This would create fear and eeriness around the film which would promote our product which would make it more effective.

6. What I learnt about the technology from the process of constructing this product when it comes to the Sony HD cameras as we have captured shots like; Pans, Sub POVs, Close ups, extreme close ups, master shot, over the shoulder shot, two shot and forward dolly. We tried to use a variety of shots using the camera.

For the editing part we used adobe premiere to put together the film and create match on action in the editing part. To make the other effects we used ‘after effects’  to create effects such as  glitches, 3D title sequences, red tinting in the opening title sequence, colour correction to make the film to be darker. Also, for the parts  where we wanted it to look like it is form the cameras point of view we used the cinematic black bars, black camera frames in the corners, the red recording animation  and added more grain to this part that than to the other parts. This made those parts more real as it looks like those parts are actually recording and you can easily differentiate this part to the rest.

The thing I Have learnt about BlogSpot for the blogging part is that it enabled us to use blogger and put all our media work on it this year. Blogger enabled to keep the work safe so that we would not lose the work. Also, we used it to plan our media product through analysing existing products and the films that we analysed we took a video of that movie and we used them to make are finished product.

7. When I look back to the preliminary task and now I think I have learnt a lot of things about media production and how to make a good finished product. One of the things I have learnt is that once you have a bit of experience using the camera and once you have all the camera shots in your head you can use them to make a variety of shots for our media product. In our preliminary task we did not use some shots that we used in our finished product like dropping the camera, the sub POV and an over the shoulder shot which we used more shots rather than using just one shot and only one shot.
In our group (me, Dan and Rhys) worked well as we all had a job and we all had are little strengths to contribute to the team. Last time when we worked on the preliminary task there were more of us so we could not split the jobs well enough but this time we worked as a group to produce a good finished products. Also, we did not need 4 people as we were using actors rather than using just us.
In the preliminary task we did not talk about the characters that much and we did not think who would suit each roll of the preliminary task and this time we thought about each character in detail and what actor could be playing that character. We also, used blogger to write about each character what they are like and who they are in our product.
When we were recording we were always aware of the 180 degree rule and we obeyed by this rule and we never broke it also we would know if we would break as it would not natural and the film it did feel natural. As the character are always in the same position as they were and should be.
Also, we used match on action just like in the preliminary task to switch the angle which we were recording.
logo progression

Lastly, we used more special effects like glitches, 3D titles, red tinting and colour correction in the title sequence as we had more experience using premiere and after effects we know more what we could do to make our product better so from the preliminary task we did not use any special effects we only edited it to put it together and add music we did not have enough time for this part. The thing I learnt is that you can do use premier and after effects to create a lot of things and make our media product look good.

Task 2: analysis of another horror movie; Underworld.

This film called underworld about a war between two immortal species vampires and lycans, the war has been raging for more than a thousand years. it is directed by Len Wiseman, starring Kate Beckinsale as the main beautiful vampire warriors character beside the famous actor Bill Nighty as the very powerful vampire. This is based upon the graphic novels by Kevin Grevioux which also stars in the movie as the second in command in the Lycan clan.
It starts with the production companies' logo videos and then the name of the movie is stretched out for the whole screen. The background is just a dark colour signifying that this movie is not gone be a romantic movie but it will probably be a horror movie. the music does not sound like a nice peaceful film but like kind of like a monster as vampires/werewolves are monsters.

There is a bell ring between the showing of the production companies logos which the bell signifies church, Sunday and religion which normally things of this kind would signify good things but in this movie the mood that you are getting is that the characters may be doing things against what religion says e.g. do not kill.

The first scene is very dark and there is a storm with lighting and raining making the whole atmosphere very dark, gruesome and scary to fit it with the genre that it is while the camera is tilting down. A female character is talking (voiceover) while this is going on talking about a war in a formal accent, ans she is using words like "halt" and "Horde" which are words that are not used in the modern world which may signify that she is older than what she looks like.
The female is wearing a dark (black) cat suit with a black coated cape, she has dark and looks in her mid twenties. Once the camera stops tilting, you see the female character and then it starts forward tracking to get closer to the female character, the wind is creepy because of the wind is blowing the cape towards the camera. By the words that the female is talking she is a vampire so she will be older than what she looks like so she will be quiet powerful. She does not seem like she is scared of the night and the high altitude by looking at her body language as she is leaning towards the edge of the tower and how she is in those dark clothes which match the mood and the atmosphere of the whole scene. She calls her self a 'deathdealer' she has negative connotations, the word 'death' means basically dead while 'dealer' means that someone buys or sells something and if you would add them up it may say that she is someone who sold her life away. from the things that she says you can make out that she likes her life and she likes being at war with  the werewolves and killing them as she says 'we've become obsolete, petite because I lived for it' this may mean that  that without this war she has nothing to live for.

The location is quiet high and creepy because of tall towers which look like the towers of a church or something quiet old linking this again with religion as they may not follow religious views but they will be breaking them and also vampires and werewolf are not associated with the good side but the bad (hell) which the scary church like location links with it.

The female then jumps of the tower, the music changes as soon as she jumps of it and the music gets louder and more like a sound of a weird noise who is someone making while she is falling until she hits the ground the music fully changes into more powerful and brutal which is showing that something may happen later in the scene.

Task 5-Script

Opening Voiceover.
Reports of a tall, faceless ‘figure’ have been raised within the area as numerous reports are coming in of missing children and teenagers. This figure is claimed to be a mythological creature, which goes by the name of the ‘Slender Man’. However no evidence has been recorded as electronic equipment are distorted within it’s presence. The myth claims that this creature is summoned by the drawing of a symbol and specialists warn all parents and guardians not to let children anywhere near the forests.

Aidan: There is your proof right there.
Connor: (Laughs) that wasn’t even real Aidan!
I’m going to get a camera. We are going to prove that you are a baby.

(Connor walks off into another room and Aidan pulls his book from under the table)

(Aidan opens his drawing book and finds a clean page. On the page, he draws a circle)

Connor: (interrupts Aidan drawing) Come on. Come help with the camera.
(Aidan gets up and walks into the other room where Connor is standing)
Connor: Alright, You’re the Nerd you fix the camera. I’m off to the toilet.
(Barges into Aidan and walks off)

 Aidan: No. Over there!
 Connor: I don't see anything!
Aidan: Connor, check out over there... i swear i just heard something!
Connor: Baby.

(Connor walks off in the direction that Aidan is pointing)

(Aidan opens his drawing pad and looks around. He then begins to draw the cross on the circle to make the slenderman symbol. Aidan then admires his drawing looking confused about everything. Connor grabs Aidans shoulder making him jump)
Connor: (Shouting) What are you doing! Your scared enough as it is! Why are you drawing that!?
Aidan: (Quietly) I don't know. I just wanted to see what would happen i suppose.
Connor: Your just an idiot Aidan.
( A Very loud sharp noise can be heard over the top of the characters. Deafening them)

Summarizing the questionnaire

Horror- In this questionnaire people most liked jump scenes so the audience likes when something makes you jump. As a camera shot audience like subjective point of view because it makes it more real and horrors are normally less real than other genres, and you cannot see the antagonist/protagonist to keep audience in suspense. Also, we found that the protagonist and the antagonist do not have any relation makes it more interesting as they do not know each other and they will find things about each other. The antagonist should extremely clever as his power as it makes it more human t have this kind of power and it does not make the antagonist so much more powerful than the protagonist. The protagonist should be school/college student because the protagonist seems weak and as the people who were doing are questionnaire were teenagers they will want to see someone who is in their age rather than someone who is much older.

Romantic comedy has to have a predictable plot/story line. E.G.Two people, who are not supposed to be together, they fall in love, they normally hate each other or are far from each other.
Simple characters with Simple conflicts/fights so very easy resolution. there is normally a time where a character messes up but they come  back to each other in the end. Must have a happy ending! you do not generally see an unhappy ending which would change the whole course of romantic comedies, all fairy tales have happy endings.
Usually characters who have completely different views/lifestyles (one is usually very privileged where as the other is usually very sympathetic or seen as the underdog figure from a ‘basic’ background. Initial meeting usually occurs within the first 10-20 minutes of the film and is used as a way of introducing the main characters. Main characters have a friend, which usually provides guidance and moral support and can even protect the main character in some cases. The friend is usually a work colleague, a sibling/relative or a close friend (someone who they have known for some time).

Thriller movie has to:  Create tension and excitement for the audience.  Normally it takes place in a more exotic place such as foreign countries/cities.
Protagonists usually seen as ‘hard men’ who look for danger but could be ordinary people who find themselves within danger. Protagonist usually finds enemies plans and finds a way too defeat them, often saving there own lives and other lives in the process, generally the hero does not die.
Antagonists usually appear cleverer (Lex Luthor/ John Doe from 'Seven')/stronger than the Protagonist. the protagonist needs to fell less powerful than the antagonist so that the protagonist has to find him self and once he over comes him self he will defeat the antagonist.

Task 4: The Pitch

Task 4: The Pitch

Start thinking about your ideas for the opening sequence of your film plot in the form of a pitch.

Thriller

Romantic Comedy

Then when they go to get marriage they find out that the man is actually a women but the daughter does not care as she knows that she will be nicer than her husband so she marries her and they live happily ever after.

Horror

It is because three years before this he witnessed a murder and that murder happened 03:33 (time).

Research

Our film idea is based on the urban myth of slender man which is a myth about a tall dark man in a business suit who has no face that kills children under the age of 16. He is known to be found in highly wooded areas and usually appears at night. He has no known weaknesses and cannot be stopped. He distorts electronic equipment when he is close to it and causes his victims to descend into madness before killing them. The myth originated from German folk lore as children would disappear after informing there parents of a tall figure following them about near the woods. The legend has spread and sightings and tape recordings of people seeing him raises all the more suspicion to his existence making the fact he could be real even scarier. People who have become the slender man’s victims have been said to have gruesome nightmares and become dizzy and develop insomnia from the sheer fear of being attacked by him. One way to summon the slender man is to draw a circle with a cross through it which provokes him to hunt you down and kill you.
( Sourced from: UrbanLegendsOnline.com)

actual story line of our opening sequence

Opening of the film starts with the convention titles, which show the production company, director, main stars and then we will include the title of the film; Divergence, and the definition of what Divergence is. The story opens with a master shot of a suburban house in which four 15/16-year-old students listening to a video/audio clip of a paranormal experience involving the urban legend, slender man that occurred in the woods near the house. The film is set around Halloween time and the students are planning on going into the woods trying to find out if the myth is true or false. As the one student is listening to the tape another is drawing a symbol on a piece of paper. This symbol in the myth is said to summon the slender man. As the student is about to put a cross through the symbol another student knocks the pencil out his hand and tells him to hurry up and help them set up the video camera. There is a cut to a SPOV of the camera as they are trying to set it up and one of the student’s presses record. Through the SPOV of the camera, there is a brief distortion of the video/audio and a quick glance at tentacles/hands in the window. From this, there is a cut to black as the camera is switched off.

There is a jump to a scene of the students walking into the wooded area. One (the more curious character) has a drawing book in his hand, filled with all slender man mythology pictures/drawing/writing. Another character (Protagonist) is carrying the video camera but he does not believe in the myth at all, is making jokes and making light of the situation. The other two characters are shown as very superstitious and wary of the situation and not sure whether to believe or not. The protagonist builds tension as he constantly makes jokes and tries to show that the situation is completely stupid and unbelievable.

While in the woods the students are recording the area looking around to find clues to see if the myth is true. At the same time, the Curious character with the drawing book has opening his drawing book in the middle of an opening in the woods and is flicking through the pages showing all the drawing and images linked with slender man myth. He gets to the drawing of the symbol and there are drums (non diegetic), which will create tension. As well as this, there will be jump cuts between this character, the other students and the camera point of view as It pans around the wooded area. There will be a mixture of low angle shots and over the shoulder shots as the curious character starts to draw a cross over the symbol. Another non diegetic sound of a heart beat gradually getting faster develops as the two lines of the cross complete and once they are both finished, the non diegetic sound ceases suddenly.

There is an over the shoulder shot of the finished symbol and a jump shot to the curious characters face, which shows his curiosity and anticipation. A hand is put onto this characters shoulder and there is a loud high pitch sound. One of the superstitious characters has grabs the curious character on the shoulder and shout at him. Tension between the characters builds which is shown by fast cuts between extreme close ups of there face and their body language. There is a medium shot integrated and some of the characters turn towards the protagonist who is exploring the trees and is now screaming. In the background you can faintly see a really tall man in a suit (very blurry – DOF). Then there is a cut to the Camera point of view as it shows a glimpse of the slender man and the camera is dropped to the floor. There is a forward track of the camera on the floor. (Motion track video into camera screen – showing distortion of the camera) Cut to the camera POV on the floor, which shows the characters running off, turning back occasionally to look and screaming/shouting. A really long arm/hand drops in front of the camera and a foot comes down. The film ends with the camera getting distorted and cutting out.

Task 2 - Analysis of a Romantic Comedy - Just like Heaven'

Just like Heaven is a Romantic Comedy produced by Dreamworks who the founder is a well known film maker Steven Spielberg and the two actors main actors who star in the movie are Rheeses Witherspoon as the female lead actress and Mark Ruffallo plays as the male lead in this movie. It is a 2005 movie directed by Mark Waters.

The first thing that happens is comes up Dreamworks SKG and their logo appears with the sound track of the movie not of  Dreamworks which breaks movie conventions as all of the film making companies have a logo and a sound track to it which on very movie they make they have that but not with this movie. The camera titles from the logo to clouds which links in with their logo as the logo is just clouds with the name of their company and they do that a lot with their films.
The sound track is a happy song, which makes a sound there is no theme tune of Dreamworks SKG. The sound track is called lustful life.
The garden looks like it could be the garden of Eden as it is a very beautiful place so if she is in the garden of Eden and she probably is Eve where is her Adam which means that she is alone at the moment but she might meet someone to be her 'Adam' as she wakes up and the scene feels like it is not finished.

The camera falling so like an angel and angels are good and are associated with love which links with the movie as this movie is a romantic comedy so it will have love as the main part of the movie.
The connotations of the colors of blue and pink are

The titles dissolve in and out in like a nice and ghostly way which could show that someone might become a ghost (someone might die or just be a ghost) because of the titles dissolving in a way that a ghost would.

The flowers show show love so the female who is sitting on the bench she might be thinking about love as stereotypical women think about love. the scene is it misty and cloudy which shows that she may be confused about love as the clouds are covering the scene.
Then the scene ends and she wakes up which means she was dreaming and that is a stereotype of women that they forever dream about finding a man, settling down and having kids.
The main character is a doctor which means that she is intelligent as doctors normally are very smart.

In the opening sequence there are three songs which have a happy mood, they are up beat as this is a Romantic Comedy  the songs suit the movie and the songs are contemporary pop songs to appeal them to the audience which would be more of a younger generation watching the movie.

The jump cuts showing pass of time which means that she is in the hospital a long time and it is showing what she has to deal with everyday.
During this part as an audience we see her communicate well with elderly and young people so she good with anyone and we can see that very well because of the jump cuts.

Elizabeth is surrounded by mothers, ex wife's and most of them have kids making her the odd one in as she is the one who does not have any of those things. one of the female doctors says to 'Elizabeth you are so lucky that all you have to worry about is work' the female doctor does not realize that Elizabeth may want those things as after they leave she is sad about all the things that she does not have but what they have.
Her sister is a match maker she has kids with a housebound and a nice home she is the opposite to her sister.
Stereo-typically women can do a lot of things at a time and her sister is one of those women so she can multi-task.

She spends 26 hours hours in the hospital which not normal to spend so many hours at your job and she drinks a lot of coffee to get some energy so her job is her life and not being a wife and a mother.
After she gets hit by the truck there is a white bright light which could signify that she may have died and went to heaven.

Task 2: The analysis of an opening film of a 'Halloween'

HALLOWEEN
John Carpenter directed, wrote and did the sound track for this movie. The theme tune is an Iconic sound track which has been put in a lot of different movies and TV shows. The soundtrack is being repeated all the way through the movie and it is repeated as a sound track that it does not change that much. The music is creepy and scary which fits with the genre of the movie which is a horror.
It is a 1978 American horror, independent film which is set in a fictional town of Haddonfield, Illionis USA.
It is a suburbian town  on Halloween who a boy kills his sister after he thinks she lost her virginity, after this he is sent to a mental institution for 15 years before he gets out and he comes back to his town to kill virgin girls before they lose their virginity.

The title sequence
The titles change color from yellow to red which it links with the genre as the colors that turn from yellow to red is fire and connotations of fire is danger which means that someone will probably be killed and we got that just from the titles. the titles are creepy so they also tells you what is the genre of the movie.
The name of the movie is 'Halloween' and the pumpkin on the left of the screen links with Halloween as it is the symbol of Halloween. The pumpkin gets bigger by the camera is basically zooming in or forward tracking on the pumpkin so as the pumpkin gets bigger it suppose to scare us. As the pumpkin gets bigger the music changes and builds up to create this psycho killer mood and the music depends and gets more darker.
Then it zooms in more on the eye of the pumpkin may show that as there is a sub POV of the antagonist this might be showing that this movie will start from the antagonist's point of view.
fade out of the pumpkin.
Some movies you are trying to figure out where the movie is set but with the caption screen it tells you that it is set in the fictional town of 'Haddonfield, Illinois, USA.

The opening scene
it is set in the nice suburbia middle class which changed the way horror movie conventions are as ever other horror movie before this one were set in dark, gory places which were in foreign places but John makes this movie come more alive as he takes it to a normal nice place and turns it into the antagonist's playground of fun. He basically took the killer home.
The titles have not faded away and you have a sound bridge of children which will signify as children are innocent but as the antagonist is not innocent and the opening scene might tell us why he will not innocent. Also, this might link in with the killer as he might be a child to show him when he was good and then he will become the killer he was destined to become.
You hear the words 'trick or treat' from children which kids always say that on Halloween  which creates the Halloween mood and then it pans to a white house.
There is sub POV of someone walking round the house looking at two teenagers when the male teenager says 'we are alone aren't we' which is like they feel that they are not alone but with someone. high pitched sound no cuts for this part making it more real as this is someone basically stalking two teenagers.

The music changes to make it more dark as the camera which is a subjective point of view of someone makes this more darker as he is trying to get into the house. you see someone taking a knife after the two teens go upstairs, you see a hand reaching for the knife which could mean that when teenagers are home alone they will want to have sex so person with a knife may want to kill them if the teenagers lose their virginity.
The clock makes a tick tock tick tock sound which could mean that the time is running away for someone. The person who is stalking the two teenagers grabs the mask with his right hand which he also used the same hand when he was took the knife, he took the mask to cover him self so that no one would recognize him and normally killers, thefts and other villain people wear masks to cover them selves so he may be trying to the same as antagonists do.
After the male teenager leaves the house the female teenager is half naked sitting and the bed is rugged up whent the camera looks at that which could show that she and her partner had sex so the female lost her virginity.  Then the person uses the knife to kill the female after the person thinks that they just had sex because the antagonist wanted for them not to lose their virginity. You find out that the person with the sub POV' s name is Michael and the feamle knows the man as she is disguested of him as he came into her room when she is n naked. She could be related to him as no one wants to see their siblings naked and he had access to the house so he might be living with her in the same house.

After the male child kills the female in her room he goes down stairs and outside with a knife and then you see the child with his knife and his parents just came looking at him confused as why he has a knife in his arm so for the first time we as audience see the antagonist because the subjective point of view made it look more interesting.
at the end of the scene there is a crane shot looking at the two parents and the child withe the knife, they have a car which was a big deal in those days as in the sixties there was not that many cars in those days so the parents are a middle class citizens. also, you can notice it by the clothes that they wear as the father has a suit on and the mother has a nice dress.
